| The Physics Department is a part of the College of Sciences in the University of Shiraz. The Department started its activities in September 1962. The faculty then included three associate professors, four assistant professors, and five lecturers. In 1966, a Masters program was also established within the Department.
After the Islamic Revolution in 1979 and the reopening of the Undergraduate and the Masters programs in the Department, an effort was made by the faculty in order to establish a Doctorate program. This was finally realized for the first time in Iran when in 1988 four doctorate candidates were admitted to the Department, and the first doctoral degree was awarded in 1992. In the last eleven years, the Physics Department has awarded 16 Ph.D.s, 120 Masters', and 1200 Undergraduate degrees. The Physics Department currently employs 2 full professors, 3 associate professors, 12 assistant professors, and 7 lecturers. The faculty is fully active in teaching and training of students, conducting state of the art research, and holding administrative positions. There are also 21 Ph.D. students, and 47 master's students, and 487 undergraduate students. The research activities of the Department are varied. A terminal thesis is required of all Masters and Ph.D. students. In addition, all Ph.D. students are required to publish in international refereed physics journals before graduation. The research fields in the department include, atomic and nuclear physics, condensed-matter physics, astrophysics and cosmology, and high-energy and elementary particle physics. Please see the faculties' curriculum vitae for each individual's research interest. There are ten educational and laboratory facilities, which are mostly used by undergraduate students, in addition to four research and laboratory facilities, which are mostly used by graduate students and faculties. |
